Middle School ELA, History, and Social Studies

The new semester will soon begin, and as a new teacher I thought it would be good for me to introduce myself. My name is Lawrence Burdick, but I like to be called, "Mr. B." by my students. It's a little more fun.

I come from a family of teachers. My grandmother was a teacher and a high school principal in Madison, Wisconsin. My mother taught elementary school. My sister teaches Advanced Placement English and History. My niece teaches fourth grade in Arkansas, and her husband is a university professor.

After graduating from college with a bachelor degree in English, I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at a private school in northern Japan. I later worked for a private company which supplied English teachers to a variety of corporations such as Toyota and Panasonic. I traveled all over the country teaching classes in conversation and grammar in places like Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.

After I returned to the United States, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning my own bookstore! I ran Book Oasis in downtown Livermore from 1993 to 2007. I had author signings, Christmas parties, and I sold books signed by many bestselling authors like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Richard Wright. I've always loved books, so this was a dream come true. I still read about three books a month.

Eventually I sold my business and returned to teaching. For the last eight years I have taught Adult Education in Dublin.  I'm looking forward to working with everyone at Livermore Valley Academy.
